I first noticed them while walking the streets of Palma de Mallorca two summers ago. Not one woman was without one! Curious, I asked my friend about these intriguingly unique items the women were wearing. She was really surprised that I didn't know. They are llamador de angeles, "angel callers," she exclaimed.

What, then, is an "angel caller"? It is an enchanting piece of jewelry consisting of a hand-designed sterling silver ball, which holds a tiny chime inside. It jingles as you go about your business. It "calls your angels."

Angel callers have been around for centuries, only becoming popular again these many years later.

One piece of lore surrounding these intriguing pieces of jewelry: In times past, when a woman became pregnant she would wear an angel caller. The baby, it was believed, would hear the gentle jingle and feel content and secure. When the baby was born, it would again hear the jingle and be reminded of its security in the mother's womb.
